Escape the humdrum of everyday life on a Spanish holiday. This Mediterranean nation offers a range of cultural, historical and recreational attractions, as well as a sunny, mild climate. Best of all, your getaway doesn’t have to break the bank: cheap holidays in Spain provide excitement and relaxation in equal measure.
Start your holiday in the Spanish capital of Madrid. This bustling metropolis is home to world-class museums, from the Museo Nacional del Prado — featuring works Spanish Velaquez and Goya — to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which houses works by 20th century masters Picasso and Dali. Spend an afternoon exploring the nearby Retiro. This huge public park forms the perfect backdrop in which to stroll, bike, rollerblade or just sit and people watch on a comfy bench near the central lake.
Head northwest of Madrid to the town of Segovia. This scenic village is packed with history, from Roman ruins — including an aqueduct dating from 50 A.D. running through the town centre — to the impressive Gothic-style Segovia cathedral that took more than two centuries to construct. Don’t miss the Alcazar de Segovia, a castle straight from a fairy tale that’s filled with suits of armour, swords and tapestries.
Further north, the coastal city of Barcelona beckons with its surreal architecture and sandy beaches. Take the three-hour Gaudi tour, an exploration of the famous architect’s most impressive creations. It includes the spiralling towers of the Sagrada Familia cathedral to the playful Park Guell filled with fantastical houses, whimsical fountains and serpentine benches from which to enjoy spectacular views of the city skyline. Spend a sunny afternoon lounging on Nova Icaria Beach. This popular city beach is lined with shops and eateries and is within walking distance of the bustling Olympic Marina.
